05 February 2024
UN welcomes UNFPA leader to Barbados to celebrate 30th anniversary of ICPD and call for stronger partnerships to achieve SRHR & gender equality.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
• Excellencies, • Hon. Kirk Humphrey, M.P., Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs • Distinguished guests, • Colleagues and partners
On behalf of the United Nations family in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, I extend a warm welcome to Dr. Natalia Kanem, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). Minister Humphrey, Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, your presence signifies the government of Barbados' unwavering commitment to the ICPD goals, which remains crucial for our collective success.
Today, we mark a historic occasion – the 30th anniversary of the ICPD, a pivotal moment in our shared journey towards a world where every individual enjoys sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
The 1994 Cairo conference shifted the narrative from population control to individual empowerment and well-being, paving the way for significant progress, and it’s legacy shines brightly tonight.
The Eastern Caribbean has made commendable strides in advancing SRHR. Barbados, in particular, stands as a regional leader. However, challenges remain, particularly in ensuring equitable access to quality SRHR services for all, especially adolescents, youth, and marginalized communities.
Dr. Kanem's unwavering dedication to SRHR and her tireless advocacy for women and girls have been instrumental in driving global progress. Her visit holds great significance for the Eastern Caribbean as we accelerate our efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030, particularly those related to SRHR and gender equality.
This reception is more than just a gathering. It's a platform for meaningful dialogue, inspiration, and forging partnerships. Let us exchange ideas, share experiences, and ignite the collaborative spark that will propel us forward. Together, we can create a world where the dignity and rights of all are upheld, where SDG 3 on health and well-being flourishes, and where SDG 5 on gender equality becomes a tangible reality.
I thank you, Dr. Kanem, for your leadership and dedication. To everyone, I invite you to enjoy the evening, engage in purposeful conversations, and contribute to the shared vision we hold for a better, more equitable world.
Please join me in a warm welcome for Dr. Natalia Kanem!
