A new initiative launched in Saint Lucia promises to strengthen the foundation of a healthy society: the relationship between parents and children.
Bonding: Creating Stronger Parent-Child Relationships, a collaboration between the Early Childhood Services Unit (ECSU) of the Ministry of Education and UNICEF, aims to equip parents with the tools and knowledge they need to raise empowered and well-balanced children. The programme hinges on a series of ten 10-minute videos, directed by journalist and filmmaker Colin Weekes.

These accessible segments tackle real-life challenges faced by parents of all backgrounds, offering guidance on navigating issues like managing tantrums, fostering good communication, and building trust."A child who has a secure relationship with parents learns to regulate emotions under stress and in difficult situations," emphasized Education Officer with the ECSU, Vernita Bruce.

Recognizing the vital role strong bonds play in shaping children's futures, the project takes special care to reach parents from diverse backgrounds, carefully selecting locations, actors, and content that resonate with a broader audience.
The need for such resources was apparent to Training Officer at ECSU, Ruth Phillips Fevrier. "Parents crave knowledge on raising empathetic, conscious, and contributing citizens," Fevrier stated. "The financial support from UNICEF was instrumental in turning this vision into reality."

Early Childhood Development Specialist at UNICEF, Shelly-Ann Harper, expressed her organisation's commitment to the project. "Investing in early childhood development is investing in the future," she asserted, reiterating the organization's unwavering support for initiatives like the Bonding series.
The project doesn't just aim to empower parents within their homes; it envisions a ripple effect throughout communities. Parliamentary Secretary Dr Pauline Antoine-Prospere urged parents across Saint Lucia and the region to embrace the initiative and share the knowledge. "Let's build a community of parents dedicated to raising children to their full potential," she encouraged.
With its engaging format, insightful content, and collaborative spirit, the initiative promises to be a significant step towards brighter futures for families in Saint Lucia and beyond. This initiative reminds us that nurturing strong bonds in the early years is not just a personal journey, but a collective responsibility that shapes the fabric of our society.
