Saint John's, Antigua & Barbuda, December 16, 2023 – In a powerful display of solidarity with the United Nations Human Rights Council, Prime Minister Gaston Browne unveiled a striking mural at the V.C. Bird International Airport early Saturday. The ceremony, attended by high-level government officials and United Nations representatives, marked a significant moment for Antigua and Barbuda as they showcased their commitment to a world where all individuals thrive.
Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. E.P. Chet Greene, U.N. Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Didier Trebucq, and President of the Antigua & Barbuda Sickle Cell Association, Dr. Edda Hadeed, joined Prime Minister Browne in the unveiling ceremony. The mural, now proudly displayed inside the Hall near the entrance of the Arrivals Lounge, visually commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights enacted in 1948.
RC Trebucq in his remarks shared that:
"Without the Universal Declaration, our common understanding of the dignity and equality of all human beings, regardless of age, gender, origin, race, religion, disability or other factors may not have been inscribed in many treaties, constitutions and laws around the world. ... As we ramp up the focus on the SDGs, it is essential to keep in mind that everyone plays a key role: this is a whole of society endeavour and an interconnected type of work for all sectors. Progress on the SDGs means progress for those persons and groups at risk of being left behind, like children and youth, women, persons with disabilities and the elderly. And for this to be achieved, inclusion and participation in the discussions and decisions about the present and future is critical. All priorities in the Caribbean, whether related to digitalization and technologies, renewable energies, Disaster Management, or employment, education and gender equality, require public awareness, information sharing, clarity about its human rights dimensions and a vision of the common good."
The event was not only a celebration of the country's dedication to human rights but also marked the end of Human Rights Week. The mural, funded by the UPR Voluntary Fund, serves as a testament to Antigua and Barbuda's commitment to fostering a world where universal human rights are upheld.
The occasion was further marked by the launch of a vibrant campaign on TikTok and billboards erected at the Antigua Recreation Grounds and UN Common Premises on Independence Drive.
The mural, which is the result of creative collaboration with the Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association, winners of the 2023 SDG Art Competition, stands as a testament to the country's commitment to inclusivity and social justice. Submissions by civil society organizations collectively showcased a world grounded in universal human rights, the rule of law, and equal justice, emphasizing the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
As the mural adorns the V.C. Bird International Airport, it not only symbolizes the nation's dedication to human rights but serves as a beacon of inspiration for travelers, affirming Antigua and Barbuda's commitment to a world where the principles of equality and justice prevail.
