Castries, November 9, 2023 - The United Nations Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has partnered with the Department of Sustainable Development of the Government of Saint Lucia to enhance Saint Lucia’s capacity to implement, monitor and report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). On November 9, 2023, over twenty officials from a wide cross-section of agencies in Saint Lucia participated in a technical workshop to strengthen the SDG coordinating mechanism with particular focus on data and statistical systems.
This technical workshop forms part of a broader week-long mission by ECLAC aimed at developing a data gap assessment to determine Saint Lucia’s ability to produce data for SDG monitoring. As part of this mission, ECLAC also engaged with focus group and bilateral discussions with several persons from the private and public sectors. This initiative is in response to calls by Saint Lucia to address data-related challenges that inhibit SDG attainment.
The workshop provided a platform for various agencies to share their experiences and challenges regarding SDG data capturing, monitoring and producing. During those discussions, the need for data sharing across departments and the identification of SDG focal points in various agencies were among gaps identified.

Following the development of a report on the assessment, the expectation is to develop a mechanism to generate, collect, analyze, and share data, that will ultimately strengthen the national statistical system through links with the National Environmental Information System (NEIS) or other data-related systems.
The workshop, which was held at the Finance Administrative included participants from governmental departments (health, education, commerce, sustainable development, tourism, agriculture, finance, economic development, gender affairs), the Central Statistical Office, the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) and the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.
