THE VALLEY, ANGUILLA - MAY 18, 2023 - In a significant step towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fostering sustainable development, Anguilla has signed its Country Implementation Plan (CIP) with the United Nations (UN). The signing took place following a courtesy call between the Hon. Ellis L. Webster, Premier of Anguilla, and Didier Trebucq, UN Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. Also present was Kenroy Roach, Senior Development Coordination Officer, Strategic Planning.
The CIP will serve as a comprehensive roadmap to guide the planning and implementation of UN development activities tailored to the specific needs and priorities of Anguilla. Aligned with the UN's regional Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (MSDCF) for the Eastern Caribbean, the CIP signifies Anguilla's commitment to realizing the SDGs and driving progress across the island.
During the meeting, Premier Ellis L. Webster expressed a strong desire to explore opportunities in the orange economy, empowering creatives, and ensuring a sense of ownership for all Anguillians, particularly those who are disenfranchised. Recognizing the transformative power of sports, the Premier emphasized his vision for sports development as a means of fostering societal improvement and cohesion throughout the island.
Premier Webster reaffirmed the importance of the SDGs and highlighted the need to accelerate progress in areas where there have been challenges. He emphasized the importance of data collection and storage for informed decision-making and expressed his administration's commitment to digital transformation. The Premier also emphasized the need for support in conducting a census and creating robust data systems to enhance policy formulation. Highlighting the positive impact of UNICEF's partnership in implementing a school feeding program in the country, Premier Webster also signalled the government’s intention to conduct a national development strategy.
RC Trebucq reiterated the UN's commitment to supporting Anguilla's development priorities and achieving the SDGs, also discussing the ongoing country poverty assessment by the Caribbean Development Bank, which can be of benefit.
Premier Webster expressed specific interest in SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and sought technical assistance in developing businesses related to water, aquaculture, digitalization, and entrepreneurship. The potential collaboration with organizations such as FAO, UNEP, and UNDP was discussed, with a focus on exploring opportunities in the Blue Economy Lab to support Anguilla's marine strategy.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing their commitment to ambitious action and collaboration to accelerate progress towards the SDGs in Anguilla. Premier Webster expressed appreciation for the UN's support, recognizing its significance for the country and its people.
