Prime Minister Mottley meets with UNIDO Director General in Vienna to advance Barbados as Global SIDS Industrial Transformation Hub

In a significant step toward advancing the global sustainable development agenda for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), UNIDO Director General, Gerd Müller, recently welcomed Prime Minister of Barbados, the Hon. Mia Amor Mottley, to Vienna for high-level talks that reinforced their strategic partnership to advance sustainable industrial development for SIDS, as well as Barbados’ leadership in driving industrial transformation, climate resilience, and sustainable growth across SIDS.

The meeting further highlighted the pivotal role of the UNIDO–Barbados Global SIDS Hub for Sustainable Development, which was established in August 2024 to support the implementation of the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS 2024–2034) through coordinated, investment-oriented development initiatives that serve the 15 CARICOM Member States.

Discussions also focused on the new joint Global SIDS Industrial Transformation Platform, which was just announced during the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum (IVECF) 2026: the platform is designed to place SIDS at the centre of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with Barbados serving as UNIDO’s lighthouse SIDS partner, promoting advanced technologies including industrial artificial intelligence, electrification, and digital industrial systems across small island economies.

During the meeting, the significant expansion of UNIDO’s programme portfolio in Barbados and the wider Caribbean region, which now exceeds USD 100 million in projects under implementation and development, was highlighted, and span renewable energy, industrial policy, digital transformation, agro-industry, and the blue economy—core priorities for sustainable economic diversification and resilience.

The meeting concluded by underscoring the strategic importance of clean technology innovation for SIDS through initiatives such as the Bloom Cleantech Cluster, which will be included under the newly established Industrial Transformation Platform to strengthen the integration between research, innovation, and industry, with this evolution expected to accelerate commercialization pathways for cleantech solutions, support entrepreneurship, and deepen regional collaboration.
