The United Nations (UN) Barbados and Eastern Caribbean recently unveiled a striking visual display at the Argyle International Airport bus stop shelter, as part of its UN80 Awareness Campaign, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter, and over 44 years of UN partnership in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The display, themed “Building on the Past. Honouring the Present. Looking towards the Future”, highlights the UN’s enduring commitment to resilience, recovery, and sustainable development, and reflects its role in supporting local communities through crises, including the response to the La Soufriere Volcano Eruptions (2021) and Hurricane Beryl (2024).
UN Country Coordination Officer for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, La Fleur Quammie, unveiled the display, noting that it was a symbol of the UN’s continued support to the Government and people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, from the La Soufriere volcanic eruptions in 2021 to Hurricane Beryl in 2024, where UN agencies came together to support recovery, provide humanitarian aid and help communities rebuild with resilience.
"But our work doesn’t stop there, we continue to collaborate with government, civil society, the private sector and even communities to support sustainable development, whether through climate action, youth empowerment or even strengthening health and education systems. As we celebrate this milestone, let’s recommit to working together across borders and sectors to build a future that is inclusive , sustainable and full of opportunity for all.”
The UN80 campaign will feature a series of activities across the Eastern Caribbean, highlighting achievements, partnerships, and the collective action needed to address today’s challenges
